Being high-profile doesn’t protect you from the consequences of high-profile allegations. This is something that a well-known Texas sports figure is finding out. Several local media outlets are reporting that a second lawsuit has been filed against Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Both pending lawsuits allege that the star QB made inappropriate sexual advances.
Problems first emerged when local news outlets reported that a female masseuse made claims alleging that she was sexually assaulted by the athlete. The woman filed a lawsuit against Watson on Tuesday, claiming that she gave him a massage and he “went too far.” In turn, Watson responded that he believes this is an attempt to solicit money from him and that he treated the woman with the “utmost respect.”
On Wednesday, a second woman filed a similar lawsuit against Watson. The individual in the second suit is also a masseuse. She claims that the athlete sent her a message on Instagram asking about her massage therapy services. After several messages and phone calls, the woman was flown from her home in Atlanta to Texas. The pair met in a hotel where the woman claims Watson exposed himself on the massage table, and she asked that he cover himself. The woman then goes into detail about how Watson allegedly assaulted and harassed her sexually.
As these cases work their way through the legal system, there is one thing that is certain. These allegations may have an impact on the future of Deshaun Watson’s career whether or not the claims are proven true. In January, a Houston station reported that Watson had officially requested a trade from the Houston Texans.
Although he had a no-trade clause in his contract, it was reported that he was eager enough to leave to waive that clause. However, in light of these new allegations, his team choices may become limited. While originally, the Texans wanted him to stay in the state, they may now be rethinking their options. Other teams may take a wait-and-see approach since hiring a player with a checkered record can sometimes hurt their “brand.”
The NFL has said they are aware of the reports but are declining to comment at this time.
High-profile cases like these highlight just how damaging assault allegations can be to a person’s career, reputation, and ability to hold and keep a job. Today, claims of sexual assault and harassment are taken very seriously and are thoroughly investigated. However, when even the slightest hint of impropriety comes to light, proven or not, it can have a profound impact on the accused individual.
You don‘t have to be a celebrity to have a sexual assault allegation damage your life. When these types of claims surface, it is important to get immediate legal representation on your side to protect your rights. Seeking legal counsel isn’t an admission of guilt. It is a valid and important step to take to protect yourself and your best interests.
